Vygotsky's theory

Deals with how social interaction affects the development of cognition. He believed that the community plays an essentail role in the development of moral attributes of a child. He believed that social learning begins and takes precedence before developmental cognition.

there are two main principles involved in his work, 1. the More Knowledgeable Other (MKO) and 2. the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD).

the MKO refers to, that there must be a person who has more knowledge, understanding of and experience in a particular area. The MKO can be a teacher, a parent, a friend, or software aided electronic teaching. What ever or who ever it has, it must have more knowledge than the learner.

The ZPD theory deals with the cognitive development level where a person is at. this level is determined by the the difference (relationship) between how someone is able to solve a problem on their own

and

solve problem with help from an adult or peer who is somewhat more knowledge in the area to help them solve it.He believed that when a person is at the ZPD for a particular task or problem,if enough assistance is provided, this will allow the person to complete the given task or solve the problem.
The theory can be applied in todays teaching environment where facilitated learning is emphasised.
The theory applies to teaching and learning where the teracher is the MKO, where he or she most times have a vast amount of knowledge in a particular area, of which is passed onto the students. The ZPD also applies where in some instances where students interact and relate to each other in group work to solve a particular problem.
Both students and teacher needs to be aware that, depending on the topic discissed either can be the MKO eg. Discussing the latest dance moves.
In terms of learning, students need to be aware their resposibility and roles they bring to the teaching-learning process. Students also need to know that there will be problems or tasks they will have to do on their own so. That the teacher can access their level of cognitive development. The teacher needs also be aware that students in one class will be at different levels of cognition, as such different types of help will be solicited from the teacher.
